Slí na Sláinte is a health promotion initiative of the Irish Heart Foundation, aimed at encouraging people of all ages and abilities to walk for pleasure and general health. A network of marked and measured walking routes, there are approx. 150 Slí na Sláinte routes in place throughout the country.
There are four Slí na Sláinte routes in Co. Mayo, all routes are marked by colourful posts, which are not numbered and which are situated a 1km intervals, walkers simply follow the km signs, setting their own pace as they go. With physical inactivity being one of the main risk factors for heart disease, using a Slí na Sláinte walking route is an excellent way to accumulate 30 minutes of physical activity, on most days of the week.
With such a large number of Slí routes around the country, the Irish Heart Foundation are continuously working with local contacts and local authorities to maintain a high quality network of walking routes. Further information can be obtained through the Irish Heart Foundation Website at www.irishheart.ie
